God's initiative has always been for humanity to live in union with Him and in unity with each other. However, from the beginning, Adam and Eve's original sin led to the separation of humanity from God. The Old Testament teaches that the Old Covenant of laws, rules, and animal sacrifices had no power to save humanity from the effects of sin, which brought about the death of the relationship between God and man. Isaiah spoke of a coming Savior who would take away the sins of the world and rule with justice. The New Testament introduces us to Jesus, the Savior born of a virgin, who proclaimed that salvation is free for those who believe in Him. Jesus, both divine and human, paid the price for our sins through His crucifixion and death on the Cross of Calvary. He was resurrected three days later and now sits at the right hand of the Father. His finished work declares that those whom Jesus sets free are indeed free from the penalty and power of sin and death. This New Covenant, by the grace of God, offers eternal life to all who believe in Jesus.
The struggles of life stem from our flesh being out of alignment with the Holy Spirit. Our flesh is not saved and never will be; it desires what it wants regardless of the consequences. The life of the flesh is in the blood of Jesus and His Holy Spirit, which grants us His righteousness. The continual spiritual war we face is between our flesh and God's plan for us to live in harmony with Him and others. Our greatest enemy is our flesh, not other people, but our lack of wisdom and belief system. A spiritual walk of faith, in alignment with God's Holy Spirit, is necessary to take control of our soul—our mind, emotions, imagination, and will. This walk of faith comes by hearing the Word of God and choosing daily to abide with Jesus. Abiding with Jesus and His words of truth gives us the Holy Spirit's wisdom to choose life over death in our daily dilemmas. Our soul needs the Word of God daily for renewal, strategy, and peace in every struggle life brings.
1. Spirit (Greek: pneuma | Hebrew: ruach)
Definition from Scripture:
Ruach in Hebrew means breath, wind, or spirit (Genesis 2:7 – God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul”).
Pneuma in Greek means wind, breath, or spirit, often referring to the immaterial part of man that connects to God (John 4:24 – “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth”).
The spirit is the seat of God-consciousness.
Key Verses:
Proverbs 20:27 – “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD.”
Romans 8:16 – “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are
children of God.”
Ecclesiastes 12:7 – “The spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
Commentary:
The spirit is the innermost part of man—his God-ward capacity. It is through the spirit that a person can commune with God, receive revelation, and be regenerated (John 3:6). Without the Spirit, man is spiritually dead, even if physically alive (Ephesians 2:1).
2. Soul (Greek: psuchē | Hebrew: nephesh)
Definition from Scripture:
Nephesh in Hebrew refers to life, living being, self, or person (Genesis 2:7 – “man became a living soul”).
Psuchē in Greek means soul, life, or mind. This is the seat of the mind, will, and emotions—the self-consciousness.
Key Verses:
Matthew 16:26 – “What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Hebrews 4:12 – The Word divides “soul and spirit.”
1 Peter 1:9 – “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”
Commentary:
The soul is the mediator between body and spirit. It is where the intellect, emotions, personality, and decision-making reside. The soul makes man uniquely individual. Salvation touches the spirit instantly, but the soul undergoes sanctification (Romans 12:2).
3. Body (Greek: sōma | Hebrew: basar) Definition from Scripture:
Basar in Hebrew means flesh, body, physical being.
Sōma in Greek means the physical body, the outward form housing the soul and spirit.
Key Verses:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 12:1 – “Present your bodies a living sacrifice.”
Philippians 3:21 – Christ will “transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body.”
Commentary:
The body is the physical frame that allows man to interact with the world. It is mortal and subject to decay (2 Corinthians 5:1), yet destined for resurrection and glorification in Christ. It is also the vessel through which man expresses the choices of the soul and spirit.
Putting It All Together
Spirit → God-consciousness (where we are born again, regenerated, and
commune with God).
Soul → Self-consciousness (our personality: mind, will, emotions).
Body → World-consciousness (our physical senses and earthly interaction).
The Apostle Paul prays in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that our whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless—showing God desires the sanctification of the whole person.
